Why you should never rent from AirBnb MadeComfy Australia is simple. They have stolen $1,000 on their pricing and have lied about their apartment amenities, most importantly, the WiFi. WiFi is not optional in my life. The entire reason I am able to travel the world and work is because of WiFi Period. Without WiFi, I would never have used AirBnb, I would rarely be traveling and I would not have explored the world over the last 29 months, renting at least 30 different apartments and coliving spaces.
No one has less respect for this lifestyle than AirBnb, to whom we collectively give millions every year renting their homes. In my experience, AirBnb considers WiFi an optional thing with their homes and it is perfectly OK for a landlord to list their home as having WiFi, when it clearly does not. This is not tangible enough for AirBnb to address as any kind of concern. Our livelihoods, which are wholly dependent on WiFi, do not matter to them and have no monetary value.
AirBnb Pricing Scam (Extra $1,000 Surprise Charge)
The Melbourne apartment I booked was clearly listed @ $2182 (USD). The checkout screen said $2182, however, when I clicked the Pay button, the next screen said "Thank you for your payment of $3,158.17." On December 29th, I immediately emailed AirBnb with the following screenshots, emailed MadeComfy with the mistake and also called AirBnb. I asked them to either honor the price I was quoted or cancel the reservation in full so I could find a place within my price range.
Both companies refuse to do anything. AirBnb has not responded to the messages or followed up on the phone call. What’s important to note is that on my call with AirBnb, which was over an hour, the representative told me it was completely normal to change the price between the checkout screen and the time you click Pay Now and that this is AirBnb’s standard business practice. This all happened December 29 and to date (January 16), AirBnb has still not addressed these concerns. I have now filed complaints with my credit card company and with the Better Business Bureau, so hopefully, one of them will do the right thing.
Both companies had the option of canceling my reservation within 5 minutes of the overcharge, and both refused. This would have cost them nothing, but it shows you how both AirBnb and MadeComfy function – we don’t care who we lie to, who we hurt, who we overcharge, and we don’t fix our mistakes. Sadly, both AirBnb and MadeComfy get even worse, but here are the screenshots of the pricing I was quoted for this nightmare apartment.

I even went back AFTER the payment went through to see if I’d missed something. My dates were now booked, as you can see, and the price STILL said the original $2182 ($1921 before taxes and fees).

This is how AirBnb and MadeComfy Australia do business. Please consider if these are the types of businesses you want to support. Or how they could destroy your life, as they’ve done mine, with their lies, stealing and cheating.

MadeComfy Lying about WiFi and AirBnb Does NOTHING
If something physical in an apartment is damaged, AirBnb may try to help. If the listing says it has a kitchen, for example, and it doesn’t, AirBnb MAY try and help. But because they can’t see WiFi, they place ZERO value on it. If you can’t do your job, AirBnb does not care. If you get fired because you missed a deadline for not having WiFi per MadeComfy’s promise, neither company cares.
According to AirBnb, we will not only steal $1000 from you, but we will also encourage and allow our home listers to lie about WiFi in their apartments, and that’s perfectly OK with us. I know AirBnb has this policy, because I had an issue a year ago with one of their apartments over the exact same thing and their response was the same. I have since spent over $30K renting apartments through credible vacation rental companies and have had ZERO WiFi issues since then. The second I’m back in an AirBnb, it started again.
Because of my last bad AirBnb experience, I specifically ask EVERY listing about their WiFi. Here’s the message I sent MadeComfy Australia, "Hi – looking for a 1 month Melbourne 1 BR rental, Jan 9 – Feb 6 (flex on dates). Nice place to myself, very strong solid wiFi throughout the apartment…" MadeComfy clearly responded with "This property has wiFi, air con, washing machine." This should mean there is WiFi, right?
I checked on January 9th to this apartment, and there was ZERO wiFi upon checkin. I did not take screenshots on January 9th, but here are some examples of MadeComfy’s WiFi in the last week since check in.
MadeComfy Australia Lies About WiFi in Apartment January 10
The first day, MadeComfy had a portable MiFI device in the apartment that had no internet at all. That was the day I missed my first deadline and lost hundreds of dollars. The next day, here are some screenshots of the wiFi in the apartment at four different times of day. The new router is "optus".
MadeComfy Australia Lies About WiFi in Apartment January 12
I don’t take screenshots every single day, but here are two January 12 (3 days after checkin and at least 40 messages to both AirBnb and MadeComfy). As you can see, neither company did a thing to fix their lies and mistakes.
MadeComfy Australia Lies About WiFi in Apartment January 14
At this point, MadeComfy is telling AirBnb they have WiFi in the apartment. Both companies are aware they have already stolen $1000 from me as well as cost me $100s in work. I have BEGGED AirBnb to refund my money and let me find an apartment I can work in. I have asked they reimburse me for the stealing as well as a small portion of the money I have lost by not being able to work. They’ve done nothing at all except send idiotic messages every 8 hours that are automated because they clearly need to meet some meaningless internal metric about "touching" an open case. Here is MadeComfy’s version of "having WiFi" – again the network is Optus.
MadeComfy Australia Lies About WiFi in Apartment January 16
Today is 1 week in this apartment. AirBnb has received EVERY SINGLE screenshot on this page and yet, here is a screenshot of the WiFi right now as I type this article (offline). Has the WiFi worked occasionally? Yes. Can you imagine how AirBnb’s revenue would look if everyone’s WiFi worked occasionally and they received daily messages like the one below?
MadeComfy AirBnb Australia Lies About WiFi in Apartment January 17
After 1 week, I finally received a reply from AirBnb from an actual human (Renzo) stating that the proof I sent vs the proof MadeComfy sent was from two different networks. The difference being a 5G in the name. We all know they are not different networks and one is out, both are out. You can read more about that here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/398620/whats-the-difference-between-5g-and-5ghz-wi-fi/, “That’s why people often configure their routers to have two separate Wi-Fi network names. One could be named something like “My Network – 2.4 GHz” and another something like “My Network – 5 GHz.” Both are hosted by the same router, but one is 2.4 GHz, and one is 5 GHz.”
So just for fun, and because my daily habit for 8 days now is to get up and fight with the Wifi (or lack thereof) in this apartment while both AirBnb and MadeComfy continue to steal and scam me, here is today’s screenshot. Of course, I keep adding to this article while I’m offline, taking screenshots, editing them and waiting for the Wifi to come back on.
And this image is of the WiFi MadeComfy to log onto (without 5G). You can also see that even after stealing $1000, lying about Wifi and getting me fired, this person is upset that I’ve hurt his feelings and will no longer do their job of stealing and lying because of this. If only that were true.
All that has happened in the last week is that MadeComfy supposedly sent AirBnb a screenshot when they stood outside my door saying they had WiFi. As I’ve already told AirBnb, it does work sometimes. I’ve also let them know I can’t do my job sometimes and that this is unacceptable. The WiFi has to work ALL THE TIME! And that I need to be reimbursed when it does not. Neither of these companies have any skin in the game at all and they clearly don’t care about the welfare or well-being of their customers.
So bottom line, AirBnb will harm you and your livelihood. MadeComfy will do the same. They do this AFTER stealing your money. If you have an AirBnb experience as a Digital Nomad where AirBnb did not support you, please let us know in the comments. If you’ve ever won this type of battle with AirBnb, we’d love to hear how you did it. If you’ve found other vacation rental companies that DO have respect for our lifestyle, please let us know that as well so we can support them.
I hope no one every has to go through this nightmare. Maybe someday, AirBnb will appreciate us Digital Nomads and how much business we give them annually. Until then, save your sanity, your job and your dollars for a worthy company!
